Chapter Study & Analysis

John 5 centers on the healing of the paralytic at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath. This miracle sparks a deep theological discourse where Jesus claims equal authority with the Father in giving life and executing judgment.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Question of Will: "Wilt thou be made whole?" (v. 6). Jesus often confronts our comfort in our brokenness. Healing requires a willingness to leave our "mats" and follow His command.
2. Dependence on the Father: Jesus claims He can do nothing of Himself (v. 19). This is the model for the believer: true power is found in absolute submission to the Father’s will.
3. The Witness of Scripture: Jesus warns that searching the Scriptures is useless if it does not lead to Him (v. 39). The Bible is not an end in itself; it is the signpost to the Person of Christ.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord of Bethesda, who by Thy word didst make the infirm man whole: heal the paralysis of our wills. May we not rest in the letter of the Law, but come unto Thee for Life. Grant that we may honor Thee even as we honor the Father, through the power of Thy Holy Spirit. Amen.
