Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
John 17 is the "High Priestly Prayer," the longest recorded prayer of Jesus. It provides a rare glimpse into the communion between the Father and the Son, focusing on the themes of glory, protection for the disciples, and the unity of the future church.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Definition of Eternal Life: Knowing God and Jesus Christ is life eternal (v. 3). This redefines salvation not as a "destination" after death, but as an intimate, experiential knowledge of God starting now.
2. In the World, Not of It: Jesus prays for our protection *within* the world (v. 15). We are not called to isolation, but to a distinct, sanctified presence that acts as salt and light.
3. The Power of Unity: Jesus prays that we may be "one" so that the world may believe (v. 21). Disunity in the church is a major stumbling block to the Gospel; our unity is a primary tool for evangelism.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Holy Father, keep through Thine own name those whom Thou hast given us. Sanctify us through Thy truth; Thy word is truth. Grant us such unity in the Spirit that the world may know Thou hast sent Thy Son. May we behold Thy glory and be with Thee where Thou art, world without end. Amen.
