Chapter Study & Analysis

John 15 uses the metaphor of the True Vine to describe the vital union between Christ and His church. It emphasizes the necessity of "abiding" for fruitfulness and warns of the inevitable hatred the world will have for those who belong to Him.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Necessity of Abiding: Apart from Christ, we can do *nothing* of eternal value (v. 5). This humbles our "doing" and prioritizes our "being" in His presence through prayer and the Word.
2. The Process of Pruning: God purges the fruitful branch so it may bring forth *more* fruit (v. 2). We must recognize that trials are often divine pruning meant to increase our spiritual character and impact.
3. Chosen for Fruit: We did not choose Him; He chose us (v. 16). Our purpose is defined by His appointment, which is to manifest lasting fruit that brings glory to the Father.

FORMAL PRAYER

O True Vine, in whom alone we find our life and strength: grant that we may abide in Thee continually. Prune away from us every dead work and selfish desire, that we may bring forth much fruit for Thy glory. Strengthen us to endure the world’s enmity, knowing that we are chosen and loved by Thee. Amen.
