Chapter Study & Analysis

John 19 records the crucifixion, death, and burial of Jesus. It highlights the fulfillment of specific Messianic prophecies and the definitive cry of victory: "It is finished" (*Tetelestai*), signifying the completion of the work of atonement.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Sovereignty of the Cross: Even in His suffering, Jesus is portrayed as a King. The title on the Cross—"Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews"—was a divine irony that declared His true status to the world.
2. It is Finished: This single word (v. 30) means the debt is paid in full. There is nothing we can add to our salvation; we can only receive the finished work of Christ with gratitude.
3. The Emergence of Secret Disciples: The burial by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus (v. 38-39) shows that the Cross has the power to turn fearful, secret followers into courageous, public witnesses.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lamb of God, who didst bear our sins in Thine own body on the tree: we adore Thee for Thy finished work. May the blood and water that flowed from Thy side be to us a fountain of cleansing and life. Grant that we, being dead unto sin, may live unto righteousness through the power of Thy Cross. Amen.
