Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
John 12 marks the transition from Jesus’ public ministry (The Book of Signs) to His passion (The Book of Glory). It opens with the prophetic anointing at Bethany and the Triumphal Entry, concluding with the arrival of the "hour" of His glorification through the metaphor of the dying grain of wheat.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Fragrance of Sacrifice: Mary’s "wasteful" anointing (v. 3) challenges the modern utilitarian mindset. True worship is often seen as "extravagant" by the world, but it is the only proper response to Christ’s worth.
2. The Principle of the Seed: "Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone" (v. 24). To be fruitful in this life, we must be willing to lose our lives for His sake.
3. Walking While the Light is Present: Jesus warns to walk while the Light is with us (v. 35). This is a call to immediate spiritual urgency; we must not delay our response to God’s grace while the opportunity remains.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord Jesus, King of Glory, who didst enter Jerusalem to die for the sins of the world: teach us the secret of the grain of wheat. May we not love our lives in this world unto destruction, but rather yield ourselves as a sacrifice of sweet savor unto Thee. Draw all men unto Thyself through the power of Thy Cross. Amen.
