Chapter Study & Analysis

Mark 9 begins with the Transfiguration and continues with the healing of an afflicted boy and teachings on humility and the reality of hell. It emphasizes the need for prayer and the danger of causing others to stumble.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Help Mine Unbelief: The father’s cry—"Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief" (v. 24)—is the honest prayer of every struggling believer. God meets us in our weakness, not just our strength.
2. Greatness through Service: The disciples argued about who was the greatest, but Jesus taught that the greatest is the servant of all (v. 35). Our goal should be usefulness, not status.
3. The Salt of the Earth: We are called to "have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another" (v. 50). This involves a purified life that promotes harmony within the community.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Risen and Glorified Lord, before whom Moses and Elias did appear: keep us from the pride of position and the sin of causing others to stumble. Help our unbelief and season our lives with the salt of Thy grace, that we may live in peace with all men. Amen.
