Chapter Study & Analysis

Mark 7 addresses the conflict between human tradition and divine commandments. Jesus travels to Gentile regions, healing a Syrophenician woman’s daughter and a deaf-mute man, signifying the expansion of the Gospel beyond Israel.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Inward vs. Outward Religion: God is concerned with the heart, not just ritual washing (v. 6-8). We must ensure our private motives are as clean as our public professions.
2. The Humility of Faith: The Syrophenician woman’s persistent and humble response (v. 28) shows that those who recognize their unworthiness are the ones who receive Christ’s greatest blessings.
3. He Hath Done All Things Well: The people’s reaction to the healing of the deaf man (v. 37) is a summary of Christ’s entire ministry. Everything He does is for the restoration of humanity.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord of Truth, who hast taught us that out of the heart proceed the issues of life: cleanse our inward thoughts by the inspiration of Thy Holy Spirit. Grant us the humility of the stranger and the ears to hear Thy voice, for Thou doest all things well. Amen.
