Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Mark 11 covers the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, the cursing of the fig tree, and the cleansing of the Temple. It emphasizes Jesus’ authority over religious institutions and the power of faith-filled prayer.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Fruit of Faith: The withered fig tree (v. 20-21) serves as a warning against spiritual hypocrisy—having the leaves of religious profession without the fruit of actual obedience.
2. A House of Prayer for All: Jesus’ zeal for the Temple (v. 17) calls us to evaluate our own worship spaces and hearts. Are they places of genuine prayer or have they been cluttered with worldly pursuits?
3. The Authority of Forgiveness: Jesus links the power of prayer directly to our willingness to forgive others (v. 25-26). Standing in prayer requires a heart free from resentment.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O King of Peace, who didst enter Jerusalem in humility: cleanse the temple of our hearts from all that defiles. Grant us a faith that moves mountains and a spirit that forgives as we have been forgiven, that our prayers may be heard in Thy sight. Amen.
