But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

Mark 10 Study & Commentary

Mark 10 addresses marriage, wealth, and the nature of the Kingdom. It includes the healing of Bartimaeus and the third passion prediction, concluding with the definition of Christ’s mission as a ransom for many.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Covenant of Marriage: Jesus reaffirms that God joins husband and wife into one (v. 9). We must treat the marriage bond with the highest level of sanctity and commitment.
2. The Danger of Riches: The rich young ruler loved his possessions more than the Kingdom (v. 21-22). We must examine our own hearts for any idols that prevent us from total surrender to Christ.
3. What Wilt Thou That I Should Do? Jesus asks Bartimaeus what he wants (v. 51). We should come to God with specific requests, trusting that He is willing and able to open our eyes.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Son of David, who camest not to be ministered unto but to minister: have mercy upon us. Open the eyes of our hearts that we may see Thy way. Grant us the grace to leave all and follow Thee, for Thou art our only Ransom and Hope. Amen.
