Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Mark 14 narrates the events of the Passion: the anointing at Bethany, the Last Supper, Gethsemane, the betrayal by Judas, and the trial before the High Priest. It highlights the abandonment of Jesus by His disciples and His voluntary suffering.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Extravagant Love: The woman with the alabaster box (v. 3) teaches us that no sacrifice for Jesus is a "waste." True love is willing to be criticized by the world for the sake of honoring the Savior.
2. The Spirit and the Flesh: In Gethsemane, the disciples slept while Jesus prayed (v. 38). It is a stark reminder that even with a willing spirit, we must actively watch and pray to overcome the weakness of the flesh.
3. Loyalty in the Shadow of the Cross: Peter’s denial (v. 71-72) serves as a mirror to our own fragility. It warns us against overconfidence in our own strength and points us toward our need for Christ’s sustaining grace.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord Jesus, who in Gethsemane didst surrender Thy will to the Father: grant us the grace to watch with Thee. Deliver us from the fear of man and from the weakness of our own flesh. When we falter, restore us by Thy mercy, as Thou didst Thy servant Peter. Amen.
