Chapter Study & Analysis

Mark 2 highlights the growing controversy surrounding Jesus’ authority to forgive sins and His association with outcasts. It features the healing of the paralytic, the calling of Levi, and the clarification of the Sabbath’s purpose.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Faith that Acts: The friends who lowered the paralytic through the roof (v. 4) demonstrate a creative and persistent faith. We should be willing to overcome any obstacle to bring others to Christ.
2. The Physician of Souls: Jesus came for the "sick" (v. 17). Recognizing our spiritual need is the first step toward receiving His grace. He welcomes the tax collectors and sinners who seek Him.
3. Lord of the Sabbath: Jesus reminds us that religious institutions exist for the benefit of man, not to be a source of legalistic oppression (v. 27).

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord Jesus, Great Physician of our souls: we thank Thee that Thou hast called us not because we are righteous, but because we are in need of Thy mercy. Grant us a faith that overcomes obstacles and a heart that rests in Thy perfect provision. Amen.
