Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Samuel 24 records David’s sin in numbering the people. This act of pride leads to a pestilence. David chooses to fall into the hand of the Lord for mercy, and the book ends with David purchasing the threshingfloor of Araunah to offer a sacrifice.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Sin of Self-Reliance: Counting the people was an act of trusting in numbers rather than in God (v. 2). We must beware of measuring our success by statistics instead of by our spiritual health.
2. The Hands of a Merciful God: Faced with judgment, David said, "Let us fall now into the hand of the Lord; for his mercies are great" (v. 14). God’s discipline is always better than man’s "mercy."
3. Sacrifice Must Cost Something: David refused to offer that which "cost him nothing" (v. 24). True worship and service involve personal sacrifice; if it doesn't cost us, it may not be true worship.

FORMAL PRAYER

Forgive us, Lord, for our pride and self-reliance. Teach us to value Thy mercy above all else and to offer Thee worship that is sincere, sacrificial, and focused on Thy glory alone. Amen.
