Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Samuel 13 records the devastating sins within David’s household. Amnon, David’s eldest son, rapes his half-sister Tamar. Absalão, her full brother, waits two years and then murders Amnon in revenge, fleeing into exile.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Danger of Passive Parenting: David was "very wroth" but took no disciplinary action against Amnon (v. 21). Silence in the face of sin within the family often leads to greater tragedy.
2. The Deception of Lust: Amnon’s "love" turned to "greater hatred" immediately after he got what he wanted (v. 15). Lust is selfish and destructive, unlike true love which seeks the good of the other.
3. The Bitter Root of Revenge: Absalom let his anger simmer for two years (v. 23). Unresolved hurt, when not brought to God or dealt with through justice, turns into a murderous intent.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord, protect our homes from the spirit of lust and violence. Grant parents the courage to discipline with justice and love, and help us to release our hurts to Thee before they turn into roots of bitterness. Amen.
