Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Samuel 5 marks the historical moment when all Israel anoints David king at Hebron. David then captures Zion (Jerusalem) from the Jebusites, makes it his capital, and wins two major victories over the Philistines.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Fruit of Perseverance: After years of exile and partial rule, David is finally king over all (v. 3). God is faithful to finish the work He begins in us.
2. Establishing a Center for Worship: By taking Jerusalem, David created a place for God’s name to dwell. We should strive to make our homes and lives "cities of peace" where God is central.
3. Inquiring of the Lord Repeatedly: David asked God before BOTH battles with the Philistines (v. 19, 23). Past victory does not excuse us from seeking fresh guidance for new challenges.

FORMAL PRAYER

We thank Thee, Father, for Thy faithfulness. Grant us the discipline to seek Thy counsel in every new battle, never relying on yesterday’s strength for today’s needs. Amen.
