Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Samuel 17 describes the conflicting counsel given to Absalom. Hushai (David’s spy) thwarts Ahithophel’s wise but deadly plan, giving David time to cross the Jordan. Ahithophel, seeing his counsel rejected, commits suicide.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. God Thwarts the Wise: God answered David’s prayer to "turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness" (v. 14). No human strategy can succeed against the purposes of God.
2. The Courage of the Small: The messengers Jonathan and Ahimaaz risked their lives to deliver news (v. 17-21). God uses the brave actions of "ordinary" people to preserve His anointed.
3. The End of Pride: Ahithophel could not handle the rejection of his wisdom (v. 23). When our identity is in our intellect rather than in God, failure becomes fatal.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
We thank Thee, Lord, that no counsel can stand against Thy will. Protect us from the pride of our own wisdom and help us to be faithful messengers of Thy truth, regardless of the risk. Amen.
