Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Samuel 16 follows David’s journey away from Jerusalem. He is cursed by Shimei and betrayed by his counselor Ahithophel. Meanwhile, Absalom enters Jerusalem and publicly defiles David’s concubines, fulfilling God’s judgment.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Restraint Under Attack: David refused to let his men kill Shimei, considering that God might be using the curse to humble him (v. 10-12). Sometimes, the best response to an insult is silence and self-reflection.
2. The Fallibility of Human Wisdom: Ahithophel’s counsel was once like the "oracle of God" (v. 23), yet he used it for evil. Talent and wisdom without character are dangerous tools.
3. The Exactness of God’s Word: What David did in secret with Bathsheba, Absalom did in the open (v. 22). God’s forgiveness is total, but the earthly consequences of sin are often precise.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Grant us, O Lord, the grace to endure criticism with humility. Deliver us from the counsel of the ungodly and help us to walk in such integrity that our lives reflect Thy holiness in public and in private. Amen.
