Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Samuel 20 describes the rebellion of Sheba, a Benjamite who tried to pull Israel away from David. Joab murders Amasa in a jealous rage but successfully suppresses the rebellion at the city of Abel through the counsel of a wise woman.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Toxicity of Professional Jealousy: Joab killed Amasa simply because he was a rival for command (v. 10). We must guard our hearts against the "Joab spirit" that sees others' promotion as a threat.
2. The Wisdom of One Person: A single wise woman saved an entire city from destruction (v. 16-22). God uses calm and strategic wisdom to settle conflicts that brute force would only worsen.
3. Decisive Action Against Division: Sheba’s rebellion was nipped in the bud. Leaders must address divisive spirits quickly before they infect the entire community.

FORMAL PRAYER

Grant us, O God, the wisdom to be peacemakers in our communities. Deliver us from the spirit of envy and help us to seek the welfare of Thy people above our own status. Amen.
