Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master's son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

2 Samuel 9 Study & Commentary

2 Samuel 9 recounts David’s kindness to Mephibosheth, the lame son of Jonathan. Remembering his covenant with Jonathan, David restores Saul’s lands to him and grants him a permanent place at the king’s table.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Beauty of Grace: Mephibosheth did nothing to earn the king’s favor; he received it because of someone else’s covenant (v. 7). This is a perfect picture of how we are accepted by God because of Christ.
2. Faithfulness to Promises: David sought out someone to whom he could show "the kindness of God" (v. 3). We should actively look for opportunities to honor our commitments and help those who cannot repay us.
3. Restored Dignity: The king’s table turned a "dead dog" (as Mephibosheth called himself) into a son of the king. Grace doesn't just forgive; it restores our identity.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, we thank Thee for Thy kindness toward us, the spiritually lame. Help us to be channels of Thy grace to others, seeking out the forgotten and showing them the love of the King. Amen.
