Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Samuel 14 describes Joab’s scheme to bring Absalom back to Jerusalem. He uses a wise woman from Tekoa to convince David through a parable. Absalom returns but is not allowed to see the king’s face for two years.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Partial Forgiveness is Not Reconciliation: David allowed Absalom to return but refused to see him (v. 24). Forgiveness that keeps someone at a distance without restoration often breeds further resentment.
2. The Allure of Outward Appearance: The text notes Absalom’s physical perfection (v. 25). We are warned again that a beautiful exterior can mask a rebellious and prideful heart.
3. God’s Way of Restoration: The woman of Tekoa mentions that God "deviseth means, that his banished be not expelled from him" (v. 14). This is a beautiful shadow of the Gospel—God reaching out to bring us home.

FORMAL PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we thank Thee for devising the means to bring us back to Thee through Christ. Grant us the grace to forgive others fully, seeking true reconciliation rather than mere tolerance. Amen.
