Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Samuel 23 contains the "last words of David" and a list of his "Mighty Men." It emphasizes the character of a righteous ruler and the extraordinary exploits of those who were loyal to David.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Standard for Leadership: He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God (v. 3). Secular skill is no substitute for the fear of the Lord in leadership.
2. Valuing the Team: David didn’t achieve the kingdom alone; he had men who would risk their lives for a cup of water (v. 16). We must honor and protect the "mighty men" God has placed in our lives.
3. The Power of an Everlasting Covenant: Even as he faced death, David’s hope was in the "everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure" (v. 5). Our ultimate security is not in our legacy, but in God’s promise.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, make us leaders who rule in Thy fear and servants who are loyal to Thy truth. We thank Thee for the "mighty men and women" in our lives who strengthen our hands for Thy work. Amen.
