Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
1 Kings 1 describes the struggle for succession as David nears death. Adonijah attempts to seize the throne, but Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba intervene. David commands that Solomon be anointed king, and the coup is thwarted.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. God’s Chosen Over Man’s Choice: Adonijah relied on his appearance and political connections (v. 5-6), but God had already chosen Solomon. We must trust in God’s selection rather than human ambition.
2. The Importance of Vigilance: Nathan and Bathsheba acted quickly to ensure David’s promise was kept. God uses the wise intervention of His people to fulfill His divine decrees.
3. The End of Self-Exaltation: Adonijah’s feast turned to fear when the truth was revealed (v. 49). Exalting oneself outside of God’s will always leads to a shameful collapse.
