Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Hebrews 6 exhorts believers to go on unto perfection. It contains a solemn warning against apostasy and emphasizes the unchangeable nature of God’s counsel, presenting our hope in Christ as an "anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast."
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Pressing Toward Maturity: We must leave the principles of the doctrine of Christ and go on unto "perfection" (maturity) (v. 1). We should build upon our foundation rather than constantly restarting our spiritual life.
2. The Immutability of God’s Promise: God confirmed His promise with an oath, so that by "two immutable things" (His word and His oath) we might have strong consolation (v. 17-18). God cannot lie.
3. The Anchor of the Soul: Our hope enters into that "within the veil" (v. 19). No matter how violent the storms of life become, our souls are anchored to the person and work of Jesus in the presence of the Father.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Almighty God, whose counsel is immutable: we thank Thee for the strong consolation of Thy promises. Grant that our hope may be an anchor to our souls, sure and stedfast, as we press toward the mark of spiritual maturity. Amen.
