Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Hebrews 5 introduces Christ as a High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. The author rebukes the readers for their spiritual immaturity, noting that they still need "milk" when they should be ready for the "strong meat" of deeper doctrine.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Source of Eternal Salvation: Christ became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that "obey him" (v. 9). Our faith is not a mere intellectual assent, but a submissive trust in His Lordship.
2. Spiritual Maturity: We are warned against becoming "dull of hearing" (v. 11). Constant growth is expected; staying in a state of perpetual spiritual infancy is a sign of neglect.
3. Discerning Good and Evil: Maturity is defined by having our senses exercised to discern both good and evil (v. 14). This requires a consistent diet of the "word of righteousness" and practical application.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Lord, who wast called of God an high priest after the order of Melchizedek: grant us the grace to grow in Thy knowledge. Deliver us from spiritual dullness and nourish us with the strong meat of Thy Word, that we may be mature in faith. Amen.
