Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Hebrews 2 warns against letting the Gospel "slip" through neglect. It explains why Jesus became lower than the angels for a time: to taste death for every man, destroy the power of the devil, and become a merciful and faithful High Priest.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Danger of Drifting: We must give "earnest heed" to the things we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip (v. 1). Spiritual decline is rarely a sudden jump; it is usually a slow, quiet drift away from the Truth.
2. Identifying with Humanity: Christ took on "flesh and blood" so He could be a merciful High Priest who understands our infirmities (v. 14-17). We are never alone in our suffering; our Savior has felt it first.
3. Victory Over Death: Through His death, Christ destroyed him that had the power of death, delivering those who were in bondage to fear (v. 14-15). The Christian need not fear the grave, for the sting of death is gone.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord Jesus, who wast made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death: we praise Thee for Thy mercy. Help us to take earnest heed to Thy Word and to find comfort in Thy sympathy for our temptations. Amen.
