Chapter Study & Analysis

Hebrews 11 is the "Hall of Faith," defining faith as "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." It recounts the victories and sufferings of the patriarchs, prophets, and martyrs who lived by faith in God’s promises.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Pleasing God through Faith: "Without faith it is impossible to please him" (v. 6). Our religious activities mean nothing if they are not rooted in a fundamental trust that God is, and that He rewards those who seek Him.
2. Living as Strangers: The heroes of faith confessed that they were "strangers and pilgrims on the earth" (v. 13). We must maintain a healthy detachment from this world, seeking a "better country, that is, an heavenly."
3. Endurance in Suffering: Faith is seen not only in miraculous escapes but also in the strength to endure "mockings and scourgings" (v. 36). True faith trusts God’s character even when the immediate circumstances are dire.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God, who art the Rewarder of them that diligently seek Thee: grant us that faith which is the substance of things hoped for. Help us to walk as pilgrims in this world, looking for that city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Amen.
