Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Hebrews 1 establishes the supreme deity and authority of Jesus Christ. The author argues that Christ is the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of His person, being far superior to the angels, who are merely ministering spirits.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. God’s Final Word: In these last days, God has spoken unto us by His Son (v. 2). We must not look for "new" revelations that bypass or contradict the finished message of Jesus Christ.2. The Sustaining Power of Christ: He upholds all things by the "word of his power" (v. 3). When our lives feel out of control, we can rest in the sovereignty of the One who maintains the very fabric of the universe.
3. Worshipping the Son: Angels are commanded to worship Him (v. 6). Our devotion must be directed to Christ alone, recognizing Him not just as a teacher, but as God manifest in the flesh.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O God, who in times past spake unto the fathers by the prophets: we thank Thee for speaking unto us by Thy Son. Grant us the grace to behold His glory and to submit to His scepter of righteousness for ever and ever. Amen.
