Chapter Study & Analysis

Hebrews 12 exhorts believers to "run with patience the race that is set before us," looking unto Jesus. It discusses the necessity of fatherly chastening and contrasts the terror of Mount Sinai with the grace of Mount Sion.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Laying Aside Every Weight: We must lay aside not only sins but "every weight" that hinders our spiritual progress (v. 1). Anything that distracts us from Christ, even if not explicitly "sinful," must be evaluated.
2. The Purpose of Chastening: Whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth (v. 6). We should not despise God’s discipline, for it is proof of our sonship and is intended to make us partakers of His holiness.
3. Looking unto Jesus: He is the "author and finisher of our faith" (v. 2). When we are weary and faint in our minds, the remedy is to "consider him" who endured such contradiction of sinners against himself.

FORMAL PRAYER

Heavenly Father, who chasteneth every son whom Thou receivest: grant us to be in subjection unto Thee and live. Help us to follow peace with all men and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Amen.
