Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Corinthians 1 addresses the problem of divisions within the church and contrasts human wisdom with the "foolishness" of the Cross. Paul emphasizes that Christ is the power and wisdom of God, calling believers to unity in mind and judgment.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Unity Over Personalities: Believers should not divide themselves based on loyalty to specific leaders (v. 12-13). Our primary identity and loyalty must be found in Christ alone.
2. The Power of the Cross: To the world, the Gospel may seem like foolishness, but to those being saved, it is the power of God (v. 18). We must never water down the message to fit intellectual trends.
3. Boasting in the Lord: God often chooses the weak and foolish things of the world to confound the wise (v. 27). This prevents human pride and ensures that all glory goes to Him.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God, who hast called us into the fellowship of Thy Son Jesus Christ: deliver us from all divisions and contentions. Grant that we may be perfectly joined together in the same mind, boasting only in the Cross of our Lord. Amen.
