Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Corinthians 9 presents Paul’s defense of his apostolic rights, though he chose to waive those rights for the sake of the Gospel. He uses the metaphors of an athlete and a racer to illustrate the discipline required to finish the spiritual course.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Becoming All Things to All Men: Paul was willing to adapt his approach to reach different groups of people (v. 22). We should be flexible in our methods while remaining uncompromising in our message.
2. The Necessity of Preaching: "Woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!" (v. 16). For the believer, sharing the Truth is not an option but a divine compulsion.
3. Spiritual Discipline: Like an athlete, we must "keep under" our bodies and bring them into subjection (v. 27). Self-discipline is necessary to ensure we are not disqualified after leading others.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord Jesus, who didst give Thyself freely for us: grant us a heart to serve without demanding our rights. Help us to run the race with patience and discipline, that we may obtain the incorruptible crown and lead many to Thy salvation. Amen.
