Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
1 Corinthians 10 warns against overconfidence by citing Israel’s failures in the wilderness. Paul provides the famous promise regarding temptation and concludes by exhorting believers to do "all to the glory of God," especially in matters of conscience.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Learning from History: The failures of those before us are written for our admonition (v. 11). We must not assume we are immune to the sins of idolatry, murmuring, or immorality.
2. The Escape from Temptation: God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond our ability, but will provide a "way to escape" (v. 13). We must look for that way and take it when it appears.
3. The Ultimate Goal: Whether we eat or drink, or whatsoever we do, we should do all to the glory of God (v. 31). This is the highest standard for every human action and decision.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Faithful God, who art with us in every trial: we thank Thee for providing the way of escape from temptation. Grant that in all our choices, whether small or great, we may seek only Thy glory and the edification of Thy people. Amen.
