Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Corinthians 12 explains the nature and purpose of spiritual gifts. Paul uses the analogy of the human body to show that while there are "diversities of gifts," they all come from the same Spirit and are intended for the "profit of all" within the unified Body of Christ.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Diversity in Unity: Just as the body has many members, the church has different roles (v. 12-14). We must value every person’s contribution, recognizing that no member is unimportant or self-sufficient.
2. The Source of Ability: The Holy Spirit divides gifts "to every man severally as he will" (v. 11). We should neither be proud of our gifts nor envious of others, but faithful in exercising what God has assigned to us.
3. Mutual Care: The purpose of the body’s design is that there should be "no schism," but that members should have the same care for one another (v. 25). Your gift is not for you; it is for the person sitting next to you.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Holy Spirit, who distributest Thy gifts according to Thy sovereign wisdom: help us to function as faithful members of Christ’s Body. Deliver us from pride and envy, and grant us a heart to care for one another in love. Amen.
