Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Corinthians 14 provides practical guidelines for the use of prophecy and tongues in the church assembly. Paul emphasizes that "edification" is the primary goal of public worship and that "God is not the author of confusion, but of peace."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Seeking to Edify: The goal of everything done in the church should be the "edifying of the church" (v. 12). If an activity or gift does not help others grow, it should be practiced privately rather than publicly.
2. The Importance of Clarity: Unless people understand what is being said, they cannot be built up (v. 9). We should prioritize clear, biblical teaching that speaks to the hearts and minds of the listeners.
3. Decency and Order: All things must be done "decently and in order" (v. 40). Spontaneity in worship must be balanced with the structure that prevents chaos and honors the character of God.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God of Peace, who art not the author of confusion: grant that our assemblies may be filled with Thy Spirit and Thy order. Help us to seek those things which edify our brethren and to worship Thee with understanding and reverence. Amen.
