Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Corinthians 11 addresses proper order in public worship, focusing on head coverings and, more critically, the correct observance of the Lord’s Supper. Paul rebukes the church for their divisions during the meal and restates the institution of the ordinance by Christ.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Respect for Sacred Ordinances: The Lord’s Supper is not a common meal but a participation in Christ’s body and blood (v. 24-25). We must approach communion with reverence and a clear understanding of its significance.
2. Self-Examination: Believers are commanded to examine themselves before partaking (v. 28). This involves confessing sin and reconciling with others to avoid eating and drinking "unworthily."
3. Community Unity: The "Lord’s Supper" should reflect the unity of the church. Disregarding the poor or creating cliques during sacred gatherings brings judgment rather than blessing.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord Jesus, who didst institute this holy meal in remembrance of Thee: grant us grace to approach Thy table with a pure heart. Help us to discern Thy body and to live in such unity that our worship may be acceptable in Thy sight. Amen.
