Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Chronicles 13 follows David’s first attempt to bring the Ark to Jerusalem. Because they carried it on a "new cart" instead of on the shoulders of the Levites, Uzza is struck dead for touching it, teaching a lesson on God’s holiness.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Doing God’s Work, God’s Way: Good intentions do not excuse a violation of God’s instructions. We cannot use "modern carts" (worldly methods) to carry the "holiness of God."
2. The Fear of the Lord: Uzza’s death reminded David that God is not to be handled casually. We must approach the things of God with deep reverence and awe.
3. The Blessing of Obed-edom: While the Ark brought judgment to Uzza, it brought blessing to the house of Obed-edom (v. 14). God’s presence is a fire that warms the obedient and burns the careless.

FORMAL PRAYER

Most Holy God, teach us to reverence Thy presence. Help us to serve Thee according to Thy revealed Word and not according to our own convenience or innovation. Amen.
