Chapter Study & Analysis

Esther 9 details the victory of the Jews over their enemies and the institution of the Feast of Purim. The mourning is turned into joy, and the day of intended destruction becomes a day of celebration.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Turning Mourning into Joy: God is the specialist in "The Great Reversal" (v. 22). He can take our darkest day and turn it into a season of celebration.
2. Remembering the Deliverance: Purim was established so the next generation would not forget God’s rescue. We must create "monuments of memory" for the victories God gives us.
3. Unity and Charity: The feast involved sending portions to one another and gifts to the poor. Our joy is only complete when it is shared with the less fortunate.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God, who turnest the shadow of death into the morning: we thank Thee for our deliverances. Help us to live in the joy of Thy victory and to be a source of blessing to the poor. Amen.
