Chapter Study & Analysis

Esther 8 describes the reversal of Haman’s decree. Since a Persian law could not be revoked, a new decree is issued allowing the Jews to defend themselves. Mordecai is promoted to Haman’s position, wearing royal robes.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The New Decree: The old law of death couldn't be canceled, but a new law of life was written (v. 8-11). This is a shadow of the Gospel: the law of sin and death is overcome by the law of the Spirit of life.
2. Urgency in Communication: The messengers were "hastened and pressed on" (v. 14). When the message is about life and death, we must move with speed and focus.
3. The Light of Victory: For the Jews, there was "light, and gladness, and joy, and honour." God’s restoration is thorough, covering every emotional and social dimension.

FORMAL PRAYER

We thank Thee, Lord, for the "new decree" of life in Christ. Help us to spread Thy Word with urgency, that those under the shadow of death may find light and gladness in Thee. Amen.
