Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Esther 3 introduces Haman, the king’s favorite, who becomes enraged when Mordecai refuses to bow to him. Haman plots to destroy all the Jews in the empire and secures a royal decree for their execution.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Destructive Power of Pride: Haman’s pride was so fragile that one man’s refusal to bow made him want to commit genocide (v. 5-6). We must guard our hearts against the poison of self-importance.
2. The Mystery of Iniquity: Evil often works through legal decrees and political power. We must be prepared to face opposition that seems "legal" but is spiritually wicked.
3. Integrity in Conviction: Mordecai refused to bow because of his commitment to God. Our primary allegiance must always be to the King of Kings, regardless of the cost.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Deliver us, O Lord, from the snares of the proud. Give us the courage of Mordecai to stand for what is right, even when it is unpopular or dangerous to do so. Amen.
