Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Kings 2 records David’s final charge to Solomon and his subsequent death. David exhorts Solomon to keep the law of Moses. Solomon then consolidates the kingdom by removing threats like Adonijah, Joab, and Shimei.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The True Mark of Manhood: David told Solomon, "Show thyself a man" by walking in God’s ways (v. 2-3). Biblical manhood is defined by obedience to Scripture, not by physical strength or power.
2. The Justice of God: Long-standing sins (like Joab’s murders) eventually face judgment (v. 31-34). God’s patience should not be mistaken for indifference toward sin.
3. Establishing the Kingdom: Solomon removed those who were loyal to themselves rather than the throne. To serve God effectively, we must "put away" the internal rebellions that hinder our walk with Him.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, grant us the strength to be faithful to Thy statutes all the days of our lives. Help us to deal justly with our past and to build our future on the firm foundation of Thy Word. Amen.
