Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Kings 3 tells of Solomon’s famous request for wisdom. God appears to him in a dream, and instead of riches, Solomon asks for an "understanding heart." God grants him wisdom, wealth, and honor, followed by the demonstration of his wisdom in the case of the two mothers.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Prioritizing Wisdom: Solomon realized his own inadequacy for the task (v. 7). When we admit our weakness, we are in the best position to receive God’s supernatural wisdom.
2. Seeking the Kingdom First: Because Solomon asked for what pleased God, God gave him what he didn’t ask for (v. 13). Seeking God’s will brings blessings we could never plan for ourselves.
3. Discernment in Crisis: The judgment between the two mothers (v. 24-27) shows that godly wisdom looks past words to the motivations of the heart.

FORMAL PRAYER

Grant us, O Lord, an understanding heart to discern between good and evil. We confess our own lack of wisdom and ask for Thy guidance in every decision we face this day. Amen.
