Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
1 Kings 11 records the tragic fall of Solomon. He loved many foreign women who turned his heart after other gods. God raises up adversaries against Solomon (Hadad, Rezon, and Jeroboam) and declares that the kingdom will be rent apart.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Danger of Unequal Yokes: Solomon’s wives turned away his heart in his old age (v. 4). Who we allow into our inner circle will eventually influence our direction.
2. Gradual Decline: Solomon didn’t leave God in a day; it was a slow process of compromise. We must guard against the "small" deviations that lead to total departure from the truth.
3. God is Faithful even in Judgment: God promised to leave one tribe to David’s line for David’s sake (v. 13). Even when we fail, God remains faithful to His eternal covenants.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Deliver us, O Lord, from the snare of compromise. Guard our hearts in our latter years, that we may finish our course with the same zeal with which we began. May we never exchange Thy glory for the idols of this world. Amen.
