Chapter Study & Analysis

Nehemiah 1 introduces Nehemiah in Shushan. Upon hearing that Jerusalem’s walls are broken and its gates burned, he weeps, fasts, and offers a powerful prayer of confession, laying hold of God’s promises to restore His people.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Burden of Leadership: Nehemiah’s first reaction to bad news was prayer and fasting (v. 4). A true leader carries the burden of his people before the throne of God.
2. Confession and Identification: Nehemiah included himself in the sins of the nation (v. 6). We must take personal responsibility for the spiritual state of our communities.
3. Praying the Promises: He reminded God of His Word to Moses. Effective prayer is based on God’s revealed character and specific promises.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, give us a heart that breaks for what breaks Thine. Grant us the spirit of intercession and help us to be mindful of Thy promises as we seek the restoration of what has been destroyed. Amen.
