Chapter Study & Analysis

Nehemiah 2 details Nehemiah’s request to King Artaxerxes. With the king’s permission and resources, he travels to Jerusalem, surveys the ruins by night, and inspires the leaders to "arise and build," despite the mockery of Sanballat and Tobiah.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The "Arrow Prayer": Nehemiah prayed to God in the middle of his conversation with the king (v. 4). We can have a constant, silent dialogue with God even in high-pressure professional moments.
2. Strategic Planning: He inspected the walls secretly before announcing the plan (v. 12-16). Good leadership requires thorough assessment and timing before public execution.
3. Answering Critics: When mocked, Nehemiah didn't argue; he declared that "The God of heaven, he will prosper us" (v. 20). Trust in God is our best defense against discouragement.

FORMAL PRAYER

Grant us, O Lord, the wisdom to plan and the courage to speak. May we work with the confidence that Thou art the one who prospers our handiwork for Thy glory. Amen.
