Chapter Study & Analysis

Nehemiah 13 chronicles Nehemiah’s final reforms after returning from a trip to Persia. He cleanses the Temple, restores the Sabbath, and rebukes the people for intermarriage, ending with the prayer: "Remember me, O my God, for good."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Danger of Drift: In Nehemiah’s absence, the people quickly reverted to old sins. We must remain vigilant; spiritual maintenance is a daily requirement.
2. Honoring the Sabbath: Nehemiah fought for the sanctity of God’s time (v. 15-22). We must protect our time of rest and worship from the encroachment of worldly business.
3. A Leader’s Accountability: Nehemiah’s repeated prayer was for God to remember his faithfulness. At the end of the day, our primary audience is God, not man.

FORMAL PRAYER

Remember us, O our God, for good. Help us to remain faithful when no one is watching, and grant us the courage to correct what is wrong and to protect what is holy in Thy sight. Amen.
