O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.

Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?

Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Micah 6 Study & Commentary

Micah 6 - The Lord’s Controversy: God brings a case against Israel, reminding them of His faithfulness in the Exodus. He asks what He requires of man, rejecting empty sacrifices and demanding justice, mercy, and humility. He rebukes the "scant measure" and dishonest scales.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Divine Lawsuit: God calls the mountains and foundations of the earth to be witnesses to His case against His people.
2. The Heart of Religion (v. 8): A summary of the moral Law: "to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God."
3. Social Injustice: God cannot overlook the "treasures of wickedness" gained through deceitful weights and dishonest business practices.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. What God Wants: God is more interested in our character and how we treat others than in our religious rituals.
2. Honesty in Daily Life: Our "weights and measures" (how we deal with money and people) are a direct reflection of our walk with God.
