Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Micah 1 - The Coming of the Lord: The Lord cometh forth out of his place to judge Samaria and Jerusalem for their transgressions. Micah laments for the cities of the land, using wordplay to describe the coming disaster from the Assyrian invasion.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. The Witness of the Lord: God is presented as a witness against His people from His holy temple (v. 2).
2. Cosmic Judgment: The mountains melting and valleys cleaving symbolize the irresistible power of God’s holiness against sin.
3. The Incurable Wound: Samaria’s idolatry is described as an incurable wound that has reached the gates of Jerusalem.
Practical Lessons
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. The Contagion of Sin: Evil that starts in one place (Samaria) often spreads until it threatens the very heart of the nation (Jerusalem).
2. Mourning for Sin: Like Micah, we should not be indifferent to judgment but should lament the spiritual state of our communities.
