Ezra 3 Study & Commentary
Ezra 3 describes the restoration of the altar and the laying of the Temple foundation. The ceremony is marked by a mixture of loud shouts of joy and the weeping of the elders who remembered the first Temple.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Altar First: Before building walls, they built the altar (v. 3). Our first priority in any "reconstruction" of life must be the restoration of our personal worship and sacrifice.2. Unity in Labor: The people gathered "as one man." Significant spiritual work requires collective effort and a unified heart.
3. Valuing Small Beginnings: We should not let the memory of "past glory" rob us of the joy of "present progress." Every brick laid for God is a cause for celebration.
