Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Ezra 1 records the proclamation of Cyrus, king of Persia, fulfilling Jeremiah’s prophecy. Cyrus inspires the Jews to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple and restores the holy vessels taken by Nebuchadnezzar.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. God Moves Hearts: God "stirred up the spirit" of a pagan king (v. 1). We must remember that no leader is beyond God’s sovereign influence to fulfill His purposes.
2. The Purpose of Prosperity: The gold and silver were returned for the specific task of worship. Our resources are given to us to build God’s kingdom, not just our own comfort.
3. Fulfilling Prophecy: God’s timing is precise. After 70 years, the door opened exactly as promised. We can trust God’s "calendar" for our own lives.
