Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Corinthians 1 begins with Paul praising the "God of all comfort" who sustains believers in tribulation. He explains the reason for his delayed visit to Corinth and emphasizes that all the promises of God in Christ are "Yea and Amen."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Comfort to Comfort Others: God comforts us so that we may be able to comfort those in any trouble (v. 4). Our pain often becomes the platform for our most effective ministry to others.
2. Trusting God in Extremity: Paul speaks of being "pressed out of measure" to the point of despairing of life (v. 8). Such moments are allowed so that we might not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead.
3. The Integrity of God’s Promises: Every promise of God is confirmed in Jesus (v. 20). We can build our lives on the certainty of His Word, which never wavers or changes.

FORMAL PRAYER

Father of mercies and God of all comfort: we thank Thee for Thy presence in our tribulations. Grant that we may trust Thy promises as Yea and Amen, and use our experiences of Thy grace to strengthen those who are in need. Amen.
