Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Corinthians 8 exhorts the church to excel in the "grace of giving." Paul points to the example of the Macedonian churches and, ultimately, to the self-impoverishment of Christ for our sakes as the supreme motivation for generosity.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Sacrificial Giving: The Macedonians gave out of their "deep poverty" (v. 2). True generosity is not measured by the amount given, but by the sacrifice made relative to one’s means.
2. The Example of Christ: Jesus, though He was rich, became poor for our sakes (v. 9). Our giving should be a reflection of the Gospel—a voluntary act of love for the benefit of others.
3. Integrity in Finances: Paul took care to provide for "honest things" not only in the sight of the Lord but also in the sight of men (v. 21). Church and ministry finances must be handled with absolute transparency and accountability.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, who for our sakes didst become poor: grant us a heart of grace to be generous. Help us to manage our resources with integrity and to give joyfully for the relief of Thy saints and the advancement of Thy Kingdom. Amen.
