Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Corinthians 7 expresses Paul’s joy over the Corinthians’ repentance following his "sorrowful letter." He distinguishes between "godly sorrow," which leads to salvation, and "worldly sorrow," which leads to death.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Godly Sorrow vs. Worldly Sorrow: Godly sorrow produces a repentance that leads to life and leaves no regret (v. 10). We should not fear the pain of conviction if it leads us back to God.
2. Cleansing for Holiness: Having these promises, we should perfect holiness in the fear of God (v. 1). Our motivation for purity is not fear of punishment, but gratitude for the promises of God.
3. Encouragement in Ministry: Paul was comforted by the coming of Titus and the news of the church’s zeal (v. 6-7). We should be intentional about bringing "good news" and comfort to those who lead and serve us.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, grant us that godly sorrow which worketh repentance unto salvation. Comfort us in our tribulations as Thou didst Paul, and help us to live in such a way that our lives bring joy and encouragement to the body of Christ. Amen.
